If you haven’t signed up for our monthly newsletters, you likely missed this tip from HRU President Tim Sackett: April is the perfect time to stop “fooling around” with a hiring process that isn’t working as well as it should.

It’s easy for hiring processes to become a little clunky over time. Maybe timelines have stretched, communication isn’t as consistent, or decision-making feels slower than it used to. The problem is—today’s candidates don’t wait around. If the process drags, they move on.

This is a great time to take a step back and evaluate what might be slowing you down. Are there too many steps? Are hiring managers aligned on what they’re looking for? Are candidates getting clear, timely updates? Even small gaps can create friction that costs you strong talent.

A few simple adjustments can make a big difference:

  • Tighten your interview timeline and reduce unnecessary steps
  • Align internally on expectations before you start interviewing
  • Keep communication clear and consistent with every candidate

At the end of the day, hiring should feel smooth—not stressful. When your process is clear, efficient, and aligned, it becomes much easier for great candidates to say yes.
